Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — In Centre County, several community swimming pools that are badly in need of upgrades will soon be receiving new funding to help keep them afloat.
It’s a summer favorite! One spot that remains popular post pandemic is the local swimming pool.
“It’s such great socialization, recreation, physical fitness, it’s all those things. Most importantly, it’s such a community anchor.”
But in recent years, COVID shut some of those community anchors, and especially in more rural areas, the old concrete swimming pools are in bad shape.
“Concrete, as we all know, doesn’t have a hundred-year life. The concrete is deteriorating. The pool is deteriorating. Honestly, its bale, twine and duct tape are what’s keeping us going. So, it needs a lot of repairs.”
That’s how officials are describing the community pool in Millheim and a similar situation is at the Mountaintop Pool in Snow Shoe.
Additionally, we’ve been following for several years, the multi-million-dollar fundraiser to refurbish and reopen the Kepler Pool near Bellefonte, where $110,000 is still needed.
On Tuesday, the Centre County commissioners, with a boost from federal COVID relief money, approved a pool party of sorts: funding for all three sites.
“We are in the process of allocating the remainder of our American Rescue Plan funds. We’ll fund the $110,000, along with the Millheim and Mountaintop pools, they need this money right away. The Mountaintop pool wouldn’t have diving boards this year.”
The Mountaintop and Millheim pools will each be receiving $25,000 grants from the county.
