WASHINGTON (TND) — The Professional Women's Hockey League and Molson are teaming up to increase women's visibility in the sport.
This week, the PWHL and beverage company announced a multi-year partnership and updated jersey design through the "See My Name" campaign, to bring more recognition to the league's players.
Molson decided to sponsor the space above the jersey numbers, which are typically covered by players' hair, in recognition of the sport and International Women's Day.
Instead, the players' names will now be found below the number, which the PWHL and Molson hopes the change will "bring greater visibility and recognition to the league’s players."
By shifting the player’s name below their number, Molson is covering its name so hers can be seen.“International Women’s Day is important for celebrating and recognizing women who are change-makers, which makes it fitting for an initiative like See My Name that provides unique recognition for PWHL players,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations. “I look forward to seeing Montréal and Toronto hit the ice with these special jerseys on Friday.”
According to the PWHL, though the jerseys are currently a pilot project, they are considered the "first step of many in Molson's mission to help elevate female hockey players."
The jerseys will first be seen by fans at a Friday evening Toronto vs. Montréal game.
