Officials say changes are coming down from the state for dog licenses that owners need to be aware of.

New legislation has been passed to protect dog breeders, which makes it so all dogs will need to be licensed at 8 weeks of age, that's as soon as you buy or adopt a new puppy and take it home.

The old law stated that dogs needed a license at three months.

This new law also drops the two-dollar discount for having an older dog spayed or neutered.

The new prices will be $8.70 for a regular yearly dog license, $6.70 for senior or disabled canines and $52.70 for a lifetime license.

The new prices will go into effect on February 1st, so if you purchase your license in December or January, you will pay the current rate, and it covers all of 2024.

Officials add that it will be noted on the application that fees will increase in February.

You can go online to buy a dog license or mail an application into your county treasurer’s office.

You can get applications at various locations in each county, but you will only be able to purchase a license through the treasurer’s office.
